Construction Topping Out

Before the final beam for the structure of the new hospital was raised into position during a "topping Out" ceremony on May 21, Ohio State hosted numerous public officials for a briefing about construction and benefits of the new hospital.

Jay Kasey, senior vice president for administration and planning, detailed the benefits of construction reform for the project, as well as the use of sustainable materials.  His explained that the expansion project will help to stimulate Ohio's economic development overall and through its contracts with EDGE (minority-owned) participating businesses.

Kasey also explained how the Ohio Construction Reform not only helped to move the expansion project forward more efficiently, but also how it has created a savings of $165 million and approximately 4 - 6 months in timing.

David Schuller, MD, vice president for medical center expansion and outreach, told officials about opportunities the new facility will create for growth in research, education and patient care.  He said the hospital will transform the current tripartite mission housed in separate building of the Medical Center by creating a comprehensive facility where quality care blends seamlessly with education and research.

Guests at the briefing included: Bob Clark, district director for U.S. Rep. Steve Austria; Randall Howard and Lane Beogher of the Ohio Department of Administrative Services; Ohio Rep. Andrew Brenner; Joseph Weider, district representative for U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown; Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman; Ohio Rep. Cheryl Grossman; Ohio Rep. Nancy Garland; Ohio Rep.
