Thirtee Years in the fight against cancer
It was a crisp fall morning on Monday, September 16 as golfers arrived at Scioto Country Club, filled with anticipation for the 30th Anniversary Herbert J. Block Memorial Tournament! Friends, golfers and community supporters came together once again to support this important event, which raised money for The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James). Proceeds from this year’s tournament benefit Ohio State’s commitment to understanding, preventing and curing cancer at the OSUCCC – James.
Since its inception in 1982, the Herbert J. Block Memorial Tournament has raised more than $4.5 million for Ohio State’s cancer program. All proceeds generated by the event will be used in our continuing quest to conquer cancer by finding better ways to prevent, detect and treat this disease in its many forms.
Following an energetic day out on the course, golfers and tournament friends enjoyed a celebratory evening reception and awards ceremony. Several visitors from the Columbus Zoo added to the evening’s festive atmosphere and entertained reception guests on the Clubhouse lawn — penguins, a kangaroo, otters, an owl, flamingoes and many more! These unique guests were arranged by Ball Drop Sponsor, Joel Slaven’s Professional Animals, and provided great photo opportunities for golfers and tournament friends alike. The tournament’s signature ball drop was again a memorable part of the evening — 600 golf balls dropped from the sky! Susan Lasley purchased the winning ball drop ticket and generously donated her $2,000 winnings back to The James.
Medical Center leaders Steven Gabbe, MD and David Schuller, MD spoke on the future of medicine at OSU as well as the groundbreaking cancer research taking place at Ohio State’s Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. Guests then enjoyed a special video commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Block Memorial Tournament. Created in celebration of this milestone year, the video recognized the history of the tournament, and the many golfers, sponsors, volunteers, and friends who have impacted the Tournament and ultimately the fight against cancer at the OSUCCC-James.
The evening awards began with a memorable tribute to longtime tournament friend and volunteer, Sue Haggerty, who passed away last summer after a courageous battle against cancer. Tournament steering committee member, Julie Brooks, was awarded the first Sue Haggerty Outstanding Volunteer Award from the Block family. Julie, along with husband Keith, is a long time tournament supporter who gives so much of herself to ensuring the success of this annual event.
Skill contests and awards were given to the top three golf teams. No strangers to the winner spot, The America’s Floor Source team — Dana Bromberg, Jason Goldberg, Lee Hyo Seung, AJ McPherson, and Andrew Montooth—claimed the Tournament championship and, of course, the coveted champion jackets. They were also winners in 2008 and 2004.
The OSUCCC – James and the Block family would like to thank all 2013 sponsors, tournament players and volunteers who contributed their support so generously.
We look forward to another great tournament in 2014!
